For the first time in years, Bob Weiner, the incumbent for New Castle County Council’s District 2, has a challenger. This race is of interest for Save The Valley because a major part of Beaver Valley lies within the jurisdiction of District 2. Save the Valley is a single-issue organization, and it is an important one. We care about and fight for open space preservation and limited development within Beaver Valley.  We always support the best candidate that will further our mission of open space preservation.

After surveying both candidates we believe that Dee Durham is the better open space representative. She gave better overall responses that were more direct in answering the questions without the fluff or obfuscation.  It is clear that Dee believes in open space preservation at her core as evidenced by her history of open space and historic preservation and dedication to supporting environmental causes.

Bob has held his position for 22  years. Since 2013, we’ve begged Bob to take a stance on open space preservation in Beaver Valley. He’s remained silent until this year’s campaign season, five years later. We believe his silence has something to do with his contributions from large land developers.

We’ve also been following other development proposals around the county. Recently, Bob supported rezoning the Cavaliers Country Club from 200 housing units to 700. Although he has voiced his support for preserving Beaver Valley recently, Bob doesn’t appear to take a stance on the values he preaches.

Everything that Dee supports and is involved in shows her dedication to open space preservation. She has an impressive resume in advocacy ranging from personal volunteer hours, to personal financial sacrifice, to creating and chairing multiple preservation and environmental organizations.

Dee’s notable professional and volunteer environmental leadership shows that she is a true open space advocate:

  • Executive Director of Preservation Delaware
  • Executive Director of S.A.V.E, a land use, conservation planning and smart transportation advocacy organization based in Chester County, Pennsylvania
  • Co-Founder of Delaware Plastic Pollution Action Coalition
  • Board of Friends of Wilmington Parks
  • Board of Friends of Auburn Heights Preserve
  • Board of Brandywine Creek State Park
  • Board of Civic Council of Brandywine Hundred (CCOBH)
  • Board of Supervisors, New Castle Conservation District
  • Chair of Sierra Club Delaware
  • Grants Manager for Partnership for the Delaware Estuary

Based on our questionnaire, we have received substantial feedback from our followers and the overwhelming support is for Dee Durham. There have also been detailed critiques of Bob Weiner’s voting record, public statements and campaign finance sources. Take a read for yourself:

If either of these candidates were the deciding vote for rezoning, who would you want to decide the future of open space in Delaware?  We think the best candidate for preserving our land is Dee Durham.
